Ideas for Day of Service

Ideas for Day of Service for God's Creation:

- Creation care chapel service/ teaching day on creation care

- Organize a tree planting event on your campus!

- Host a campus-wide garbage clean-up

- Cut down on energy, and mobilize your dorm-mates to reseal your dorm's windows!

- Get a group together and conduct an energy audit for campus dorms

- Encourage students to fast from technology for the day

- Have folks sign a pledge to carpool, walk or bike for the day!

- Encourage students and faculty to tithe 10 percent of a workweek to spend time outside in God's creation!

- Host a bike maintenance stand to encourage students to bike around campus!

- To live simply, encourage students to fast from buying anything for the day! And instead ask folks to focus their time and energy on prayer and relationships.

- Work with your biology or landscaping department to plan a battle against invasive plant species on campus.

- Set up a craft area to teach people how to make their own eco-friendly laundry detergent, notebooks, soaps, etc. Then send those materials to a local charity!

- Challenge the student body to go waste-free for a day! This is super-difficult, but a great reminder of how much unneeded waste each of creates every day. (Americans create an average of 4lbs of waste per a person each day!) Give a presentation on where the waste from your campus goes, and provide ideas for cutting back on unneeded waste.

- Partner with a local conservation organization to organize a service project in your community.

- Look up a local conservancy or similar group that manages parks and natural areas, and plan a trail-maintenance outing for your campus!

- Set up a campus table and have pledge cards for students to fill out. Include thoughtful and/or practical ideas of ways for students to spend the day serving like Christ - with a heart for all of God's creation (people, creatures, and ecosystems). Include a tear-off portion for the student to keep as a reminder.

- Offer to do an educational presentation on creation care for a local church- or for your dorm!

- Host an end-of-year recycling extravaganza! Collect batteries and other recyclables and donate used furniture, shoes, clothes, and appliances to a local charity! Many of these materials get thrown out and sent to landfills as students are moving out of the dorms- when they could bless a local family instead!

- Hold a "local foods" potluck. Give a presentation on sustainable eating, and invite farmers from the area to attend. A great way to have fun and get to know your community!

 - And the end of the day, invite students,  faculty, and community members to attend a prayer service under the stars! Thank God for His amazing creation, and ask for guidance as our campuses and communities seek to become better stewards of God's earth!
