The future of our fragile, beautiful planet home is in our hands. As God’s family, we are stewards of God’s creation. We can be wantonly irresponsible, or we can be caring and compassionate. God says, “I have set before you life and death… Choose life.” (Deut. 30:19)
-Desmond Tutu, Foreword, The Green Bible, 2008
2009 DAY OF PRAYER FOR GOD'S CREATION! October 21, 2009
Renewal is a Christ-centered creation care network that focuses on living in right relationship with God. As followers of Christ, we seek to follow His example of love, stewardship, and reconciliation. For us, this means taking care of everything that God so lovingly created- the earth and each other. With a heart for the poor and a commitment to following Jesus' call to 'love your neighbor as yourself,' the students of Renewal seek to care for the earth so that all of God's people and creatures, as well as future generations, can have a healthy environment in which to live.
We all feel it. Change. A subtle spiritual shift. A quiet revolution. The emergence of a new perspective, a new evangelical identity. After years of enduring a seemingly stagnant church, new and thought-provoking evangelical perspectives are popping up all over the place- infusing Christian literature, Sunday worship, board meetings, college lectures, facebook, the media, and family dinners.
In The Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollan attempts to trace and report, in a creative way, the process of food production in America today. This challenging narrative-report naturally makes critique of industrial food as well as organic alternatives. A voice is given to the industrial farmer, the big-organic farmer, and the poly-culture farmer. It is challenging and informative with enough wit and charm to bear a grin. Healing is happening. Here is a hopeful excerpt from The Omnivore's Dilemma, describing the story of the Salatin family, who successfully parctices management-intensive-grazing to harness solar power rather than fossil fuel.
During the second week of June, Renewal's co-coordinators Ben and AJ made a trip from their respective states of Illinois and North Caroling to the nation's Capital for a week of lobbying and meetings. Since I've been my spending summer as a research intern in DC, I was lucky enough to join them for a couple of interesting days. The National Wildlife Federation had just recently formed an interesting and exciting alliance with the Christian Coalition of America. Together, along with the Evangelical Environmental Network, they organized an event to flyin faith leaders from around the country for a lobbying effort on climate change. Renewal was invited to represent the rising generation in the pastor's congregations and on professors' campuses.
